The Spencertown Academy Arts Center is a community fixture in Columbia County. Housed in a former schoolhouse built in 1847, the Academy features art exhibits and a variety of arts-related programming and events. For many years my grandparents lived next door to the Spencertown Academy and so it holds a particularly special place amidst my childhood memories. Having recently moved back to Columbia County, I felt strongly about participating in the Academy’s annual regional art exhibit, juried this year by Nicole Hayes, curator at the Fields Sculpture Park at Art Omi (another amazing Columbia County art establishment), as it seemed like a great way to connect with and immerse myself in the local art community.
At the opening I met a bunch of really great folks–artists and art lovers alike. And, to add to the festive evening, my work received first place, which was a super wonderful surprise. The first place prize includes an exhibition at the Academy in 2017, an award that I am truly excited about. I hope to create a new body of work for this exhibition that considers the details of the gallery space and that reflects ideas of home, place, and personal orientation. Work in progress to come!
