Dragonfruit, 2014
Dragon fruit is a wild looking fruit grown throughout Southeast Asia. It is the fruit of a particular species of cactus and has a thick magenta skin with flame-like, unfurling petals that make it look completely foreboding and inedible. When cut open, an even more intense fuchsia pulp is revealed. You would expect that all this show would lead to the most intense, out-of-this-world flavor. Instead though, the taste is sweet but very mild. As with the fruit, Dragonfruit is mostly show. Inspired by the shapes and symbols of signage, and by two years orienting myself while living abroad in Northern Thailand for two years, Dragonfruit provides no navigational assistance. It reflects back its surroundings saturating its environment with light and color. It leaves you with yourself.
